Did you know Earth Day wasn’t always a global movement? It started right here in the United States in 1970, thanks to a senator from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson (what a name, right?). He was inspired by the student anti-war movement and devastated by a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. He believed it was time to channel that energy into protecting our environment!
April 22nd was chosen because it fell between Spring Break and final exams, smart move! That first Earth Day brought 20 million people (10% of the U.S. population!) out to protest pollution, oil spills, and toxic waste.
Fun Fact: Earth Day helped inspire the creation of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and led to landmark laws like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act!
